Bruxism
Wednesday, April 1st, 2009Do you suffer from headaches? Unexplained pain in you jaw or teeth? You could be suffering from bruxism.
Bruxism is defined by grinding of the teeth usually accompanied by clenching of the jaw. Clenching or grinding is typically mild and seen occasionally during times of anxiety or stress, but could be more chronic and severe in some patients. Bruxism can often lead to headaches caused by tension, irritation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and tooth soreness or fracture.
Often, patients will involuntarily brux at night while sleeping or while working on high-concentration or tedious tasks throughout the day. If you brux at night, your partner may recognize the signs before you ever would. Signs of the consistent abnormal wear that your teeth may undergo can be seen as well, but not always (refer to example shown below).
